U&A HISTORY

U&A is a brand new, purpose-designed development which is made up of two separate buildings – Armouries House and Unity House.

There’s very little recorded history of what was once on the site, although it’s thought to have been linked with the city’s arms manufacturing industry, which was concentrated in Digbeth during the 18th century. In the 1900’s, Unity House on the west side of Lower Essex Street was home to the ‘Imperial Amateur Boxing Club’, after which it was operated as the Rose & Crown pub before becoming the regional headquarters for several trade unions. Hence the Name U&A, which is short for Unity & Armouries
